To the family of Mr. Harris,
My name is Chris Moselle, I am a former student of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, where i attended from 2001-2003. During this period in my young adult life I was a devoted member of the Southwestern College 'Sun' newspaper, first as a staff writer and later as the News section editor.
It was during this time as editor when i met Mr. Harris, who's presence (respectfully speaking) stood out in an otherwise young, inexperienced, immature and indeed very "westernized" classroom.
Over the following months I had the absolute pleasure and honor to get to know Mr. Harris as we covered the latest events and happenings of our unique campus community including administrative scandals, faculty contract negotiations and other critical student issues of the time. This time was also marked with the harsh realities and fallout from the attacks of Sep. 11, 2001 and the subsequent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Needless to say having someone like Mr. Harris was such a blessing during this chaotic time; Almost 20 years later I still find it hard to put into words how much I appreciated and relied on his experience and perspective as well as his calm demeanor and warm spirit, his professionalism and his enthusiasm to be the best writer and reporter he could be. These intangible qualities of character gave me so much confidence and reassurance as a young man under pressure, and I will forever be grateful for the many conversations and chats we shared on many different topics.
In every way that was apparent to me, Mr. Harris was beautiful, sweet, kind, generous, funny and of course, so bright and intelligent and capable of meeting all challenges and duties that were asked of him.
Most of all I remember his smile, his deeply rich and distinguished voice, his hearty chuckle and laughter, and the overall nobility and wisdom with which he conducted himself.
I have never forgotten his contributions to our newsroom or his friendship to those of us that knew him and worked with him. Indeed, some of my fellow alumns and I still refer to him when we get together, often imitating his baritone voice and rich accent with the fondest regard, the purest appreciation and utmost respect.
Indeed his voice and smile and laughter has always been there in my mind and heart, particularly his stories of his beloved homeland of Liberia, which were some of my favorite conversations. Myself being a history buff, Mr. Harris always had my undivided attention, reverence and respect for what he had experienced as a proud Liberian ex-pat who cared so, so deeply about his native land and fellow countymen/women.
In fact, it was after watching a brief history of Liberia this very morning that prompted me to search for my old aqcuaintance, classmate and friend Richelieu, and I am deeply saddened to learn of his recent passing. It is with great regret that I will never have the chance to personally express my deepest gratitude, appreciation and respect to Mr. Harris directly.
However, I am comforted in my mind by the sound of his voice, the warmth of his smile, the truth in his eyes, the strength of his handshake, and the memory of his kindness.
I offer my sincerest condolences and warmest regards to you, the family and friends of Mr. Richelieu B. Harris, great friend and eternal member of the proud Southwestern College Sun family. May you all be blessed and empowered in his memory, honor and spirit: and may we someday meet and share our memories of our good brother Richelieu together. Blessings and good health to you all.
