Frank Asaro

Obituary of Frank Thomas Asaro

Frank Thomas Asaro, 63, left this earth Feb 10, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer's, surrounded by his loving family. Preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice, father, Gaetano, and brother, Louis, Frank is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Lisa, his son, Matthew, daughter, Taylor, and his sister, Gina Marie Asaro. Frank is also survived by his Mother and Father in law, Tony and Mary Ann Bufalini, Brother and Sister in law, Don and Stephanie Bufalini, and Sister and Brother in law, Lori and Frank Florez.

Coming from a big Italian family, Frank’s Aunt Raija Gibaldi and Uncle Joe Balistreri also survive him, along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Frank was born April 10, 1960, at San Diego Mercy Hospital. A proud native San Diegan, Frank attended St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School and later attended Saint Augustine High School, Class of 1978. While going to school and participating in football, he was also working at their local family bakery, Frank's Bakery - Gibaldi's Italian Bread, which was founded in 1948 by his grandmother Ida and grandfather Frank Gibaldi.

Soon after graduating at Saints, Frank followed in his father's footsteps in becoming a commercial fisherman in the early 1980's. He then earned his Navigation License, where he discovered his eternal love of the sea. He traveled the world while fishing.

After a few years, Frank changed his focus to pursue a higher education and a career in Finance. He attended San Diego State University and received his Bachelor's Degree. From there, he was able to secure a Senior Position in Corporate Banking, which led to numerous financial roles, including assisting companies in Mergers & Acquisitions and public offerings as a CFO. After completing his Master's Degree at the University of Washington, Frank's commitment to giving back to his community included volunteering on the Finance Committee at Saint Augustine High School.

Some fond memories of Frank were that of his great cooking skills. He made sure to keep the Christmas Eve traditions of cooking together with family, as well dressing up as Santa Claus and passing out gifts to his little cousins and nieces and nephews.

He loved traveling with his family and enjoyed many adventures which included the family cabin in Idyllwild Mountains, skiing, and golfing in Palm Desert, but his biggest passion was competitive sailing.

Frank was a long-time member at the San Diego Yacht Club, where his high energy was appreciated during social events. Frank always had a tale to talk about his travels around the world, and the stories always got bigger & better through the years, as he was the ultimate entertainer.

Frank will be dearly missed by so many, leaving a huge void in our lives.
