I first met Joan at the gym twenty years ago while I was sweating like crazy on the stair master. She would walk by, say “Hello”, then ask what book I was reading.
It turned out we had so much in common: mutual friends; a total love of books; relatives in Michigan; sailing, her on lake Michigan, me in the South Pacific; food; wine; children; husbands and dogs. We also shared many funny stories.
The one thing she loved which I did not was sports. She knew stats, Re: batting averages. I could quote stats regarding health and medical studies. I knew enough not to call her during a game---!
As time marched on – we shared so much sadness and grief – my late husband, her sons, our dogs, her health, her treatments. Then, the loss of her beloved Bill.
I still find it hard to believe that she is gone. I will always remember her with love, Hugs, Jan.

So very sad to hear the news that Aunt Joan passed away. She will be missed. Somebody once wrote that if you expect to die when you die, you will be disappointed. Death doesn't end life. You can still think; still remember; still see, hear, move, reason, wonder, feel, question, and tell jokes, etc. Without a failing 87 year old physical body. She was loved and will be missed. Lots of memories for us and for her.

Joan and her family lived next door to me on Poinsettia Ave. in Grand Rapids, Michigan.I was in high school, in the 60's. and began babysitting her children.
They moved to East Grand Rapids, I continued to help with child care.
The family moved to California , when John passed away Joan moved back to GR and she called me. I was married and teaching at the time so during the Christmas season I brought a group of students over to sing Christmas songs by her balcony.
She was so thrilled by the music and that someone cared!
That's when we started up an adult friendship that lasted almost 50 years.
I have visited her a few times while she and Bill lived in San Diego area--always so delightful! Also, in the the assisted living home---with all her plants and flowers.
I last talked with Joan on May 22nd , we had a wonderful talk about our grandchildren. Joan loved her family and her granddaughter!
I loved Joan and will miss her being in my life. She was such a loving and special lady.
I will miss my dear special friend, Joan .
I know she is walking now almost millions of beautiful flowers!
All my love my dearest friend,
May Vining
