Obituary of Brian William Bengtson
Brian William Bengtson
August 20, 1949-March 19, 2019
Great dad, loving husband, fun grandpa, dedicated businessman and loyal friend, Brian William Bengtson (69) passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019, surrounded by his family as he gallantly battled complications of prostate cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years Anne, beloved children Lisa (Joel) and John Philip, granddaughters Kayden and Brynn and countless friends and relatives. Brian is preceded in death by his older brothers John Philip Sr. (Jay) and Robert.
Brian was born August 20, 1949, in Palo Alto, California to Kay and Phil Bengtson. At that time, Brian’s father was a football coach for the Stanford Cardinals and then the San Francisco 49ers before he moved his family in 1959 to Green Bay, Wisconsin to serve as the Packers Head Defensive Coach under Vince Lombardi. Brian spoke fondly of growing up in Green Bay. During these meaningful and inspiring years, he developed his love for competition and the game of football. Brian graduated from Premontre High School and accepted a football scholarship to Florida State University in Tallahassee. Upon graduation in 1972, he moved to San Diego where his parents had retired and he began a successful 38 year career as an Insurance Broker. Brian was active in many organizations throughout his life, including City of Hope, Irish Congress of Southern California, Marine Family Christmas Fund and more.
The greatest joy in Brian’s life was the time spent with his family. He strongly supported his children’s activities in and out of school, including music, soccer leagues, softball and baseball leagues, golf and cross country and took great pride in attending their games and supporting their passions. Home was filled with family, friends, and lots of good food. Brian enjoyed playing host for regular social events and knew how to cook and prepare a buffet line better than anyone. A highlight for the family was time spent together on vacations to a variety of locations, This past January, Brian was still strong enough to take the family for a wonderful week in Cancun. He was more than a loving husband, great dad, loyal friend and fun grandpa…he is a thousand beautiful memories.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, June 7th at 9:00 am at the San Diego Mission de Alcala followed by a joyful celebration of life at the Admiral Baker Golf Club from 11 am- 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Diego Nice Guys to support the annual Marine Family Christmas Fund (MFCF) - San Diego Nice Guys
