I didn’t know your Father, but I knew your Father through his work.
On behalf of the citizens of Naples Italy, I along with my family benefited from your Fathers medical skills and we are sorry for your loss.
In the event you have never heard this, I will share it from a non-medical viewpoint. In 1973 Naples suffered a Cholera outbreak. I was a Petty Officer First Class at the time assigned to NSA Naples. Captain Miner, Lieutenant Commander Stek Jr., and Lieutenant Commander Ferris were also at NSA Naples but assigned to Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit 7 (EPMU7).
These men save countless lives in Naples by obtaining the necessary quantities of Cholera vaccine from other US Military Commands in Europe and Egypt, then they organized a process whereby vaccinations would be given on a priority basis. I along with my family received the Cholera vaccine at the EMPU7 Facility. Furthermore, I escorted the Italian employees who worked for me to EMPU7 to receive their vaccinations.
This is the part that sticks in my mind. These men made the decision, anyone on the base would receive the vaccination, regardless of priority. The road leading up to the Base was a small two-lane road. The turnoff from the main road to the Front Gate was about one-half mile. Word soon spread that if you could get on the Base you would get a Cholera shot. Soon, the road was a mass of humanity as the Neapolitans brought their children to the Base desperate to have them vaccinated, not for themselves but their children. Every time the Gate opened only by inches the Neapolitans would push or shove their babies through the opening so they could be vaccinated.
The Navy worked with the local Italian Medical Authorities and established mass vaccination sites. The Navy used the “gun” it was an air or gas-operated device that injected the vaccine under high pressure and we set up the Navy site in the San Paolo Football Stadium (now known as the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium) if memory serves me correct the Navy vaccinated about 100,000 people by the time the outbreak had passed.
I have proved a link to a document co-authored by your Father regarding the Cholera outbreak.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep,
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea!

Our deepest sympathies go out to the Ferris family. Bill was our devoted and awesome neighbor for over 40 years. We loved him dearly. He helped us with our girls when there were some bad times, being like a second father. He made us laugh too many times to count. Our Christmas coffee time together is one of our most cherished memories. May he rest in peace.

Cousin and pal Bill Ferris should have been a politician, as he made so many feel so special: for that alone he will never be forgotten!
He and Lil's warmth and caring for others is priceless as well.
With condolances and love to Lil and family plus a big smile thinking of him and his legacy!

Bill was my "uncle" and my dads best friend. So many memories of fun, fishing and mayhem. I remember when he was visiting us in Mi-Wuk and I took my siblings and cousins ice skating in Long Barn and afterwards we were joking about Uncle Bill looking like Telly Savalas so we went looking for a Tootsie Pop (cause Telly savalas always had one on his TV show)and we had to go all the way down to Sonora and afterwards I was in so much trouble because we had been gone so long and nobody knew where we were (could have used cells phones back then). After everything calmed down Uncle Bill jumped into character and we made a great memory. Fishing in Alaska, rafting on the Trinity River. He was larger than life to me. I will miss him. I know he and dad are having a great game of tavli (backgammon) together again.

Hello,
I understand how difficult this time must be for you to deal with because someone so dear is no longer here. I recently loss my grandmother in sepetemebr of last year. The only thing that brought me comfort was knowing when I do see her again, it will be in a world much better than the one we live in now. The things we see here will be a thing of a past. Rev 21:3,4. The very thing Bill was doing in the military as a medic or even his donations to St. Jude is a testimate to the autracite he hoped would end. May you find the same comfort in this scripture as I did when I was learning to find my new normal without my love ones by my side.
Please take care of each other.
