Obituary of Alejandro Armando Vergara

Alejandro “Alex” Armando Vergara, beloved father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Born April 7, 1933 in Tucson, Arizona, he moved with his family to San Diego in 1968. Alex enlisted in the Marines in 1950 at the age of 17 to fight in the Korean War. After returning from the war, he enlisted in the Navy Reserves with the Seabees and retired Chief Petty Officer in 1992. Alex married his high school sweetheart Dora and they went on to have 6 children. Dora predeceased Alex in 2012. Alex was a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association, Local Union 206 for 64 years. He retired at the age of 59. Alex was an avid fisherman, hunter, diver, cook, artist, musician and builder. He enjoyed living in San Diego where he would scuba dive for pleasure and for abalone, which his family enjoyed immensely. He also enjoyed trapping lobster in his Stringari skiff. He would fish in the local lakes as well as deep sea fishing. He enjoyed hunting deer and javelina pigs in Arizona. Alex was a self-taught accomplished guitar player. He would play his beloved Martin guitar and sing all the great Spanish songs with his compadres at family parties. Alex is survived by 5 of his 6 children, Bobby (Cindy), Lexi (Bill), Linda (Tommy), Greg (Nancy), and Alex (Shere). His daughter Lisa Vergara Kasrawi predeceased him in 2017. Alex is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, sister Margarita Vergara, brother Francisco Vergara and other extended family. Services will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 1:15 p.m. at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, California 92122.
