Obituary of Joey Alton Thompson

Joey Alton Thompson was born in Jena, LA on May 4, 1966 and died in San Diego, CA on June 8, 2018. He moved to San Diego, California in 2007 where he met me, Marie Garberick, in 2008. We were married in 2010. He was an amazing husband – we traveled, danced and experienced life to the fullest. He was also a wonderful father to my son, Maxwell, who wrote the following tribute (feelings I couldn’t have put into words better). This man was one of the most kind, soulful, selfless, strong willed, compassionate, respectful, crazy, risk taking, adventurous, father striving, wife loving, grandpa being, stubborn attitude havin’ man I have ever met…… AND DAMN AM I GLAD MY MOM MET YOU, because it gave me the opportunity to get to know you, and who you were and what you stood for, allowing me to truly form a father like bond that I’m happy I spent a decade of my life doing. NO idea where I’d be today if it wasn’t for my mom and your goofy ass! You were there for us through everything. Helped my mom achieve great things, strive for happiness and adventure, bringing joy to her face every day….and frowns of course on the very rare days you were being a butt face, haha.. But you were always getting out as often as you could with mom to see and explore as much as you guys could, living every day to the fullest, whilst surviving the chaos life brings. You were there with my mom for us all, through Ella’s birth, helping and providing the best way you could to ensure Ella bear had everything she needed to start her life healthy and strong. You guys supported Tink and myself in our comfort and struggles as well, doing your best to see we also had the comforts and conveniences in life, as well as the support and motivation to achieve the greater comforts and desires. You still always did your best to see those around you happy, always striving to see them smile, and see them enjoy what life gives us. And you sure did, more than I can even recall. You conquered so much in the past few years. Quitting vices some spend decades trying to escape. Yet one’s lasting effect you could not escape. You fought so DAMN hard these last few months, you and mom both, with every fiber of your beings trying to bash down this minuscule creature of torment. With every struggled breath you took you fought. And that fight, that push, that strength will always be remembered, carried on for you for the rest of our lives. I will miss you, THIS family will miss you more than words, pictures, movies, Wikipedia, shoot, the universe, could ever explain. You were a spectacularly bright star to have had in this insane sky of lights we call life. And though that star may shine a little less bright, it will ALWAYS be there, twinkling down on us, never fading, never dwindling, always right there for us to remember. REST IN SILENCE, SERENITY, and ULTIMATE COMFORT Joey!!! **Spartan hand shake hug…. * “FAMILY” Forever Joey. He is also survived by his siblings – Deri, Karen, Pam, Justin and Amy. We will all miss his dearly. No services will be held. The family will spread his ashes at sea in a private gathering and then we will celebrate his life.
