William "Willie" Curtis Fewell

June 5, 1934 to January 19, 2017

Beloved husband, father and grandfather died peacefully surrounded by the love of his wife, children and grandchildren.

He was born in Benton, Arkansas, to Alva and Virgil Fewell. In his early teens his family moved to San Bernardino, California, where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Cecilia Marquez. They had four much loved children, William Curtis Jr, Dennis, Michael and Lisa.

In 1951 he joined the United States Navy. He proudly served his country for 23 years. He served both in Korea and Vietnam, where he did three tours and was a PBR (River Rat) Skipper. He proudly earned the title of Chief Boatswain’s Mate Master Diver, a brotherhood he was proud to be part of. In 1970 he became a diving instructor in Washington D.C. for the Navy. He moved to San Diego in 1973 and retired from the Navy June 1st, 1974. Upon retirement he worked for Navy Public Works as a rigger, retiring in 1996.

He never met a stranger. He loved to share his diving experiences and his memories of growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas. He was a Padres season ticket holder and was a devoted fan through thick and thin. He, along with his wife Cecilia, was so excited to watch his beloved Padres play the 1998 World Series games at Qualcomm Stadium. He and Cecilia were proud to purchase a brick that was placed at Petco Park during construction as he had many treasured memories of watching Padres games with his family. In retirement he collected baseball gear and donated it to his local Little League. He also voluteered at the Navy Relief Society on base at Miramar and was active in his local Citizen’s Patrol.

He is survived by his wife Cecilia, his sons Curtis, Dennis, Michael, daughter Lisa as well as daughter-in-laws Sonya and Michelle and son-in-laws Doug and John. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Griffin, Chase, Savannah, Maddie, Nathan, Jaden and Daylin as well as his brother James and sister-in-law Jamie. His family and friends miss him dearly.
