Thomas Robert “Tom” Kluwin, age 65, passed away at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 4, 2018. He was born to Robert and Mildred Kluwin on May 27, 1952 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was raised by both his parents and his Grandparents, Albert Kuphal and wives Alice & Ella, with his sisters Darlene and Lyneda.
Following a brief period of time studying at the University of Wisconsin he chose to join the United States Navy in 1972. He served for just over 21 years and retired as a Nuclear Weapons Technician Senior Chief Petty Officer from the USS Ranger (CV-61) in 1993. He deployed multiple times throughout his career to include Western Pacific deployments; support operations during the Vietnam War while onboard the USS Chicago (CG 11); and to the Arabian Gulf during the Persian Gulf War.
He met his future wife, Karen Allsbury, on February 15, 1973 on a blind date and their whirlwind romance led them to be married on June 30, 1973 in Santa Ana, California at the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station Chapel. Their 44 years of marriage took them many places, including being stationed in northern and southern California, Washington State, Guam, and New Mexico. Following his retirement from the United States Navy in 1993 they settled in Mira Mesa, California, a suburb of San Diego. He worked with multiple organizations until his final job at Ricoh working with Petco in San Diego, where he spoiled his four legged friends with a “biscuit” everytime they came to visit. He enjoyed watching his beloved Green Bay Packers, of which he was a proud share holder, spending time with family, and gardening during his free time. He was affectionately known as Grumpy Grampa to his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports, watching fireworks and spending time at Disneyland.
He is survived by his wife Karen, son TJ and wife Diana with grandchildren Tyler and Lillian, daughter Keri, Sister-in-law Kathy and husband Ron Birkholz, niece Amanda Frayer, nephew Jeffrey Frayer, and his Aunt Lola Gonia.
