Thomas Paul Thoryk

December 24, 1941 to July 25, 2017

Paul’s larger than life spirit, 75 years old, took the journey, likely dancing, to heaven to be with his mom, dad and family members who have passed.  Paul’s body went into a state of rest at the 5 a.m. sunrise, which he thought was a beautiful time of day. Paul left this world surrounded by his wife, all of his children, all of his grandchildren, and his brother and sister, just as he would have wished.

Paul was born in San Diego, California, the son of Ida and Joe Thoryk. He received many awards throughout high school in pole vaulting, and this is also when he met his first wife, Charlene. They married, moved to San Luis Obispo, while he attended college. In 1965, Paul graduated at the top of his class in Architecture at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo. During college, he also served in the Marine Reserves. Paul’s 52-year career in Architecture was his biggest passion in life and he worked up to the day he passed away. Paul was internationally acclaimed for his unique designs and was honored with countless awards in every area of the field. His latest dream was to build the largest resort in the world in the Dominican Republic and affordable housing for low income families all over the world. His other passions were boxing, UFC fighting, art, dancing and traveling. Paul had 3 children, Brian, Teresa and Heidi and they were the love of his life.

Paul had an amazing career and traveled the world in search of inspiration for his architectural designs. Through his travels and career, Paul met lifelong friends from all walks of life. He exemplified strength, generosity, creativity, fun and perseverance.

In January 2012, Paul met his soul mate Clairet in the Dominican Republic.  They fell in love and spent 5 ½ beautiful years together until the day he died. Paul is survived by his wife, Clairet Thoryk; 3 children, Brian Thoryk, Teresa Tracy, and Heidi McKay; granddaughters, Corie, Kaylee, Shea, Ava, and Carolyn; grandsons, Kyle, Carlo, John Paul and Isaac; brother Al Thoryk and sisters Linda  and Mona Thoryk.

Paul’s unlimited energy and love will be missed by all.

Hi, I just found out your father died. He was a great man, loved him to death! I met him through my ex husband and always kept in periodic contact with him. He actually did the plans for my remodel. He would come over sometimes around Christmas to get tamales. His personality was definitely larger than life. Never a dull moment around him! My condolences to your family. He is in my prayers!

Aloha, I've know Paul for nearly 10-years. We travelled together to China around 2012 on business. Paul was an amazingly talented man and a good friend. I just found out of his passing as I reached out to see if he could help me with a property design. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. I will truly miss Paul as will so many others. He was a force of nature with his passion, excitement and zest for life.

Paul, you have been a special friend of my family's for years. Your passion for your work and for experiencing life was a gift you shared with all of us. Your enthusiastic and energetic nature was an encouraging reminder not to take life for granted. As a family friend you were loyal and committed; expressing a profound admiration and respect for my father-something i know to have been mutual. To me, you offered a genuine willingness to be called upon for help with anything from design, to "handling" any punks causing me or my Dad any problems.😉 You used your life to better this world and the lives of those you touched; may your memory continue to inspire the rest of us to do the same. Cheers, Paul, and remember to save us rooms when you design "Thoryk's (Heavenly) tropical island resort "😁-and please send a guide to be sure we make it there! We will miss you! Paul was my mentor, benefactor and friend. At 18, this long-haired recent high school graduate with dreams of one day becoming an architect wondered into Paul's first office in Pacific Beach. I told the secretary I wanted to be an architect and I wanted to work there...most of the staff chuckled but Paul over heard the conversation and put me to work then and the office boy/apprentice. It wasn't long before Paul was sending me out to his projects to work with the contractors and learn construction - Paul's background was construction and knew how important hands on knowledge was to an architect. At night, after a day of building I would return to the office - clean and file, then Paul would sit me down and teach me how to draw. My friend once said, "Michael, your drawings are not just technical drawings, they are works of art." After 8 years of Paul's tutelage, a lot of hard work and study, I took the State exams and gained my License to practice Architecture. I owe my professional career to Paul. I spend weekends with Paul and his family at their horse ranch, and became part of the family. Building, Building, always building, taking care of the horses...taking the horses to shows from Scottsdale to San many stories, so many memories. In many ways, Paul was like a Dad to me. Rest in peace, I am forever indebted to the man that changed my life.
