Pauline May Silver

November 19, 1920 to December 7, 2017

Pauline Silver was born Pauline May Meade on November 19, 1920 in Wilmette, Ill. to Moses Meade and Martha Susanna (Ott) Meade.

Pauline began working at age 12 as a mother’s helper and housekeeper for a doctor’s family in Mansfield, Ohio. She put herself through Business College and went to work in the office of a tire company before meeting and marrying John Kruso.

She married John in Mansfield, Ohio on Dec 14, 1940. She and John had five children –  John (and Mary), Dennis (and Lynda), Stephen (and Marilyn), Diane (and Ronald Crandall)  and Adrian, seven grandchildren – Amanda, David, Crystal, Brandon, Brad, Joseph and Stephen Jr-  and six great grandchildren –  Stephen, Jacob, Thomas, Liam, Elizabeth and Nathan.

Pauline used her substantial cooking and business management skills to open and operate The Strand Malt Shop family restaurant in Redondo Beach, CA. She later became Executive Secretary for the Redondo Beach Medical Clinic.

On August 24, 1968 Pauline married Martin Silver in Redondo Beach, CA. They moved to Alpine in 1973 after purchasing Alpine Mobile Estates. Husbands John Kruso and Martin Silver both preceded her in death.

Once in Alpine, Pauline became a very active member of the community. She served as a deacon and also treasurer of the Alpine Community Church and was an active member in the Alpine Women’s Club, the Alpine Historical Society, the Alpine Garden Club and the Mountain Empire Republican Women’s Club as well as the San Diego Genealogy Society. She was an avid gardener and was often found in her garden tending her beautiful plants. Her gardens were featured several times on the annual Alpine Garden Tour. Pauline continued to drive herself and Martin and also be the Managing Partner for Alpine Mobile Home Estates until she celebrated her 90th birthday in 2010. She enjoyed cooking, baking and genealogy research but most of all, she enjoyed and nurtured her family and friends. She always had a kind and encouraging word for everyone – and usually a cookie- and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Interment was held at Alpine Cemetery, 2495 W. Victoria Dr., Alpine, CA 91901
