Manuel Abuton Bernad

January 14, 1947 to May 1, 2018

Surrounded by his family, Manuel Abuton Bernad, age 71, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Manuel, “Manny” to his friends, or “Mimi” to his siblings and relatives, was born on January 14, 1947 in Oroquieta City, Philippines to Ramon and Norma Bernad. He is the eldest of 12 siblings. He came to the USA when he was 19 years old thanks to his Aunt, Tita Perin, who brought him here to attend Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He graduated with a Master’s Degree and became a librarian which brought him to San Diego, CA. He was offered a position at the University of San Diego in Alcala Park. For 50 years, he dedicated his life to academia and later obtained an MBA from University of Phoenix.

Manny is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Marzo Bernad and their 4 daughters and son-in laws; Tanya & Geoff Calienta, Gina & Ken Sinlao, Dee Alane & Alfred Pulido, and Trina & Mike Morris. As well as his 12 grandchildren, Jade, Gianni, Alexine, Andrew, Jenna, Carissa, Gavin, Anthony, Angelina, Ashlynn, Ayden and Noelle. Our hearts are broken and he will be dearly missed.

He was a truly faithful and dedicated man. He loved Jesus and His teachings. He is blessed in life and in death. He died in state of grace wearing his scapular. A blessed Catholic man.

Eternal rest and peace be upon the soul of Manuel Bernad and may perpetual light shine upon him.  May he rest in peace in the Glory of Our Lord. Amen.

Dear Nancy and Family, Our Fos and Granados Families send our Love and Condolences to you, daughters and families. Memories of Manuel's younger days, (frequently spending Fun, Party times at our houses & singing with his guitar) will remain in our hearts forever; he made many friends on his journey of life. Manuel became an adoptive brother (uncle) & playmate to my daughters. He loved children. I shared that, one day, he would have a beautiful family of his own. He was blessed with You and your beautiful girls. May Manuel's soul, and the soul of the faithful departed, through the MERCY of God Rest in Peace. Your Shining Star will forever remain in the hearts of many who loved him. I felt blessed to see Manuel & You at my daughter's Memorial in Rancho Santa Fe. Masses and Prayers are offered for Manuel. God Bless ... Mary Fos Vance
