Jorge Navidad Gaspar

February 28, 1928 to December 19, 2017

JORGE “GEORGE” AS MANY CALLED HIM WAS BORN IN BORDEAUX, FRANCE, ON FEBRUARY 28, 1928. HE IS THE ONLY SURVIVING CHILD BORN TO PARENTS, FABIAN GASPAR, AND KIERA CRECUM.  JORGE HAD A SISTER WHO DIED PRIOR TO HIS BIRTH OF WHICH THERE IS NO KNOWN INFORMATION.  HE MOVED FROM BORDEAUX FRANCE AS YOUNG BOY BACK TO HIS MOTHER’S COUNTRY, ROMANIAN.

HIS FATHER, MOTHER, AND HE MOVED FROM FRANCE TO HIS MOTHER’S HOMELAND IN BUCHARIST ROMANIA.  HIS FATHER WORKED AS A TRAIN ENGINEER AND HIS MOTHER AS A REGISTERED NURSE.  JORGE WAS HAD TO BE BECOME BILINGUAL VERY EARLY IN HIS LIFE.  ALTHOUGH SPOKE FLUENT FRENCH HE WOULD HAVE HAD TO LEARN HIS MOTHER’S NATIVE LANGUAGE, ROMANIAN.  THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE THROUGH SEVERAL MOVES HE WOULD COME TO LEARN ABOUT SEVEN LANGUAGES IN FROM LIVING IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES.

WHILE LIVING IN ROMANIA HE WAS ENCOURAGED TO ENTER CULINARY TRAINING AS A PASTRY CHEF IN BUCHAREST.  HE HAD TO LEAVE BUCHAREST AT THE AGE OF 17 OR 18 YEARS OLD.  THE WAR BROUGHT INVASION THE GERMANS AND RUSSIANS. THE GERMANS UNDER HITLER WERE TRYING TO TAKE EASTERN EUROPE HAD INVADED ROMANIA, FORCING THE COUNTRY TO BECOME AN ALLY.  THE RUSSIANS FEARING THAT HITLER WOULD ALSO INVADE RUSSIA PUSHED BACK AND INVADED ROMANIA TO HOLD THE GERMANS BACK.

HIS MOTHER FEARING FOR HER SON’S LIFE AND SAFETY CONVINCED JORGE TO LEAVE ON A SHIP AS A  STOW-AWAY. THIS WAS TO BE THE LAST TIME HE WOULD SEE HIS MOTHER OR ROMANIA AGAIN. WHEN THE SHIP HE WAS ON EVENTUALLY DOCKED AT ELLIS ISLAND, NY.  JORGE WAS PROCESSED AS AN IMMIIGRANT.  HE WAS SENT FROM THERE TO WORK FOR THE UNITED FRUIT COMPANY ON A WORKING VISA WHICH SENT HIM TO THE HONDURAS IN CENTRAL AMERICA. JORGE STAYED HERE ONLY A FEW YEARS AND THEN DECIDED TO MOVE TO EL SALVADOR TO PURSUE WORK AS A PASTRY CHEF.

HE WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT AS A PASTRY CHEF IN EL SALVADOR BUT ALSO WORKED PART TIME TEACHING STUDENTS COOKING CLASSES.  HE MET A LOVELY YOUNG FEMALE STUDENT, DORA AGUILAR WHO WAS HIS STUDENT.  THEY FELL IN LOVE AND HAD A BRIEF COURTSHIP, MARRYING IN 1960.  THEY RECENTLY CELEBRATED 57 YEARS OF MARRIAGE IN OCTOBER 2017.

IT WASN’T LONG FOR THEM WHEN THEIR FIRST CHILD ANA WAS BORN ON 7/25/1961 IN EL SALVADOR, AND SOON FOLLOWED BY THE BIRTH OF THEIR SECOND CHILD, A SON, ROBERT BORN ON        1963. THEY HAD A THIRD CHILD GLORIA IN 1964 BUT WHO SOON DIED AFTER BEING JUST 8 DAYS OLD.

JORGE NOT CONTENT WITH LIFE AND OPPORTUNITIES IN EL SALVADOR SET HIS EYES ON IMMIGRATING TO THE U.S WHERE HE COULD WORK IN THE BIGGER AND MORE “WELL KNOWN” HOTELS.  HE LEFT FOR THE UNITED STATES IN 1965, MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY AND SETUP WITH HELP BY THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER IN NEW YORK CITY.  HERE HE ENDED UP WORKING FOR THE FINEST HOTELS LIKE THE WALFORD ASTORIA. THE NEW POSITION AS A PASTRY CHEF ALLOWED HIM A YEAR TO PREPARE BEFORE BRINGING HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN TO THE UNITED STATES.  THE FAMILY ARRIVED IN 1966, LIVING WELL IN NEW YORK CITY FOR 10 AND A HALF YEARS.  DUE TO SOME FAMILY HEALTH ISSUES A WARMER CLIMATE WAS NEEDED AROUND 1976 AND THE FAMILY MOVED TO SAN DIEGO WITH HELP FROM THEIR DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

JORGE AND HIS FAMILY REMAINED IN SAN DIEGO WHERE HE WOULD BE ABLE TO PURSUE WHAT HE LOVED TO DO THE MOST, BE A PASTRY CHEF.  HE ENDED UP WORKING IN SOME OF THE FINEST HOTELS & RESTAURANTS  IN SAN DIEGO LIKE THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO, VACATION VILLAGE, THE MARRIOTT AND PIRETS.  HIS PASTRIES WERE SO GREAT THAT HE EVEN CAUGHT THE EYE OF TELEVISION SHOW POPULAR THEN CALLED SUN-UP SAN DIEGO.

JORGE GREATLY LOVED HIS FAMILY AND STRIVED CONSTANTLY FOR BETTER OPPORTUNITIES.  HE LOVED WHAT HE DID AND IT TOOK HIM ON AN ADVENTURE FROM ONE END OF THE WORLD TO ANOTHER.

HE WAS A VERY KIND AND GENEROUS SPIRIT. HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN RECALL HOW HE LOVED TO MAKE DOZENS AND DOZENS OF LOAVES OF FRENCH BREAD TO GIVE THEM TO THE NEIGHBORS AND SISTERS AT THE CONVENT.  HIS CHILDREN, ANA AND ROBERT RECALL WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF FRESH MADE PIZZA ON WEEKENDS WITH HIM AND MOM.  HE WAS A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING DEVOTED TO HIS LOVELY WIFE DORA AND HIS CHILDREN.  ANA AND ROBERT WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HIM AS A GREAT DAD, A HARD-WORKING PROVIDER WHO SOUGHT TO GIVE THE BEST LIFE POSSIBLE FOR THE LOVE OF HIS FAMILY. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED.
