Jerry was a very devoted and kind-hearted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. One of four children raised in a very loving and fun-loving family in the Allied Gardens neighborhood of San Diego, Jerry cherished the blessing of having a close-knit family all his life and was greatly loved by a large extended family of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graduating from Patrick Henry High School, Jerry earned his civil engineering degree from San Diego State University. While in school he worked as an emergency medical technician and drove an ambulance, and his friends and family enjoyed his intriguing stories about his experience.
Also, while he was in college he met the love of his life, René, and they married in 1980. Soon after they began their wonderful life together as parents of two sons, Lance and Jason, who enjoyed the immense love and laughter their father provided. Jerry was also the proud and amazing grandfather to Tristian, who adored his granddad’s great sense of humor and shared his love of music. Jerry and Tristian spent a lot of time together and friends and family have said they’ve never known a more devoted grandfather.
Seldom a day would pass without Jerry playing music on his stereo and he was fondly chided by friends as every few years he upgraded a stereo component in search of that elusive perfect sound! Jerry also was always fond of the water, spending many hours on the bay fishing and towing the kids behind his boat on innertubes. His favorite vacations were centered around water as he enjoyed going on more than a dozen cruises around the world with René. A science fiction fan and long-time Trekkie, he loved reading sci-fi novels and watching old sci-fi movies.
Jerry retired from his 30-year career as a civil engineer for the City of San Diego in 2012. He was an amazing handyman around the home and loved the challenge of repairing appliances and anything that remotely seemed to need fixing or painting! In fact, he did some painting and power-washing at St. Andrew’s. He touched countless lives with his generosity, compassion, humor and kindness, especially youth who played on his many Little League baseball teams or seniors in a memory care home who enjoyed him playing a boisterous but endearing Santa during the holiday season. Fun followed wherever Jerry went, and he is fondly remembered for his story-telling, playful antics and being a kid at heart.
Jerry is survived by his loving family including his wife René, sons Lance and Jason, Jason’s fiancé Bree, grandson Tristian, his mother Connie, brothers Rich and Scott, their wives Patty and Lorie, his sisters-in-law Yvonne and Mary and brothers-in-laws John and Eric. Jerry also has many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins as well. He was preceded in death by his loving father Frank and sister Chris.
Our beloved Jerry, Dad and Granddad…we will miss you terribly but take comfort in knowing you are enjoying eternal life in paradise and we will see you again. In the meantime, the love, generosity, joy and laughter you gave us will live on in our hearts and cherished memories.
A memorial service and celebration of Jerry’s life has been planned for Saturday, June 3 at 1:30 pm at St. Andrew’s Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Andrew’s Youth Ministries in honor of Jerry. http://www.standrewslcsd.org.
