Elizabeth (Betty) was born in Jersey City, NJ, and raised there by her parents, Joseph and Lauretta Curley. She attended St. Nicholas Elementary School, Holy Rosary Academy, and Berkeley Business College. She was a stylish young woman, and was often pointed out by her teachers as an example of how to “dress for success.” While attending a dance at a cross-town all-boys school, Betty met her future husband, Joe, and they began a life-long journey together, settling in the South Seattle area to raise their family, and eventually retiring to San Diego.
Betty & Joe raised 7 boys and 5 girls, and the family home was full of love and chaos. It’s still a mystery how she made it through those years with her sanity intact. Betty was her kids’ biggest supporter, rarely missing a game, match or meet. She was a loving mother, but could be tough when warranted; one year, none of her children acknowledged Mother’s Day, and Betty went “on strike”, refusing to drive them to school and practices, refusing to cook meals and do laundry. It was a week from Hell for her kids, who found a new appreciation for their mother’s role in their lives.
In addition to her 12 children, Betty leaves behind 27 grandkids and 8 great-grandkids. She loved them all, and they loved her back. Grandma Betty had the ability to see that each child had something special to offer the world, and she made sure that each one felt this. She especially LOVED babies, and would light up when they visited, or when she saw pictures and videos of them.
Betty’s last days were spent surrounded by family: music was played, stories were shared, bad jokes were told. The room was full of love and chaos…very fitting. After her passing, two family members, miles apart, saw shooting stars; no doubt a sign of her express trip to Heaven.
Betty will be greeted there by her parents, her brother Joe, her stillborn daughter Mary, as well as many other family members and friends. She leaves behind her husband, Joe, her children: Joe (Eileen), Jack (Maggi), Bob (Cheryl), Greg (Deb), Edd, Babe (Matt), Thom (Angela), Patti (Kennan), Gina (Jeff), Julie (Joe), Marq (Shelby), and Danielle (Patrick), her Grandchildren (and spouses), her Great-grandchildren, as well as many other family and friends.
Mom, you’re forever in our hearts.
