Pastor Carey W. Norman

December 20, 1956 to August 25, 2018

Pastor Carey Norman went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 25th 2018. He felt called into the ministry at the young age of 14 and after graduating from Biola College and Talbot Seminary went on to become the Pastor of Westview Bible Church, where he has faithfully served as their beloved Pastor for over 40 years. He loved his church family dearly and compassionately and always felt it a privilege and a joy to pastor the flock.

During that time, he also served as the Senior Chaplain of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department for the last 22 years. Along with his fellow chaplains, he came to love and care for the men and women of the department and those in the law enforcement and safety community. He prayed fervently for all of them as well as our military service personnel and our country’s leaders.

For those who knew him, the game of golf was another passion, with countless stories of good times shared with family and friends who shared their love (and depending on the day) their frustration with the sport.

But greater than his passion for golf, was his passion for reaching those who did not know his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That is why he supported and directed Whitefield’s Missions for so many years. He yearned to plant churches in other countries and teach pastors the word of God so that they might share God’s promises and truths in their native languages. He very much enjoyed working with this international missions group and serving on the board with the partners here and in Canada.

Carey is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kitty; 4 daughters Holly, Kristy, Sarah and Lindsay; 3 son-in-laws John, Josh and J.P.; and 10 grandchildren Caleb, Nathan, Aaron, Caitlyn, Judah, Eli, Rachel, Sofia, Isabel and Gabriel. He is also survived by his older and younger brothers Jim and David Norman, and dear family friends Dean and Sheila Roberts and Christine Parks. Carey experienced immense love, joy and laughter with his family and considered himself a man most blessed in this regard.

I just heard. I am so saddened by the news. Pastor Carey was the most genuine, loving & caring man of God I’ve ever met. He was there for us in some very dark days. His heart was so kind and his sermons so inspiring. For years I have passed his church & wanted to go in and thank him for being such a great example of a Godly man for this world. Yet time passed and I never did. I pray now for his wondeful family and many friends. The world lost a good & true man of God. But in my heart i know he is right where God wants him to be. By His side after years of service & true dedication of his life to our Lord... Job well done Pastor Carey.

I am so grateful to have attended West View Bible Church and got to know Pastor Cary, the man who officiated over the funerals of my Mom and Dad, who attended for ten years, and my beloved husband Max, who attended church with me. Pastor was sincere, humorous, and passionate about his love for God, Jesus, and the Bible, sometimes to the point of tears. I will see his big smile whenever I think of him, and send my love and condolences to Kitty and her family, as well as to the congregation of West View. Heaven gained a very special angel.

I was privileged to work alongside my dear Carey when he was youth.pastor at Westview. I grew to know his shepherd’s heart very early. His life and ministry will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved Brother Carey. May God watch over Kitty and the family. May God be gracious to you. May God make His face shine upon you and give you peace. Jim Tinnell

I am forever grateful to Pastor Carey. He was a young disciple under Pastor Olson when he guided me through welcoming Jesus into my heart. My sincere condolences go out to Kitty and the girls as well as my thoughts and prayers. May the grace of God comfort you and keep you through this tragic time.

Just a few words to describe Pastor Carey: Humble, Transparent, Faithful, and Committed to the Truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My husband and I were so blessed to have Pastor Carey and Kitty in our lives. He challenged us to grow our spiritual roots deep into the soil of God's Word. We will be forever grateful for his selfless investment into our lives!

God used this beloved man in such a profound way to teach and disciple me in God’s Word for many years at Westview Bible Church. Through his love and shepherding after the death of our daughter, Jesus became not just my Savior, but the Lord of my life. God used Pastor Carey in a mighty way as he gave his life, his time, to shepherd others. I am forever grateful to the Lord for allowing us all the great privilege to serve alongside him, listen to his preaching THE Word, and the great friendship that we enjoyed as brother and sister in Christ, laughing, crying, and learning. He was special. Very special. God blessed us with him. My heart and prayers for dear Kitty, the girls, and the entire Norman family. I love you all and will continue to lift you all up in prayer. In sympathy and great, great sorrow; yet, we WILL see Pastor Carey again in heaven- a great gift from our God. With love, Katrina Lujan

I pray for God to comfort the hearts of pastor Carey's family and congregation. I had the pleasure of attending one of his services and meeting him after the service. He was very approachable and exuded kindness and humility. Not very many pastors I have met over the years have those qualities. I can only imagine the pain and confusion his family must be going through right now. To that, I have great sorrow and pray for God's comfort.

Pastor Carey Norman was an amazing pastor and friend. There truly are not enough words on this earth to really describe how awesome he was. I remember the first time my family and I attended Westview Bible Church. We made the 30 min plus journey from east county to Imperial Beach in hopes to confide in pastor Carey about a future church to attend as we were in lieu of a church and we knew there was no one better to ask then Pastor Carey. He didn't introduce us as just guests that day but his friends.  We listened to one message from Pastor Carey and we knew it was where we needed to be. The Lord didn't send us that day to have Carey help find us a church but to hear the Lords word from Pastor Carey. It was honestly a life changing event for us. Pastor Carey truly loved the Lord and the gospel and it radiated from him. He baptized my Mom and I,  he married my husband and I and had encouraging words and non stop prayers for not only me but my family as i had a difficult pregnancy. He will forever be missed but I know and trust in our Lord and savior Jesus that we will see him again. Kitty and the entire Norman family my heart and prayers are with you. God bless.

Carey was an amazing pastor. A wonderful teacher who taught us Joy. Jesus first, others, then yourself. As a man he was a loving friend who loved us all although he had a crush on his wife, children, and grandkids. It breaks our hearts that he is no longer with us but we will be forever grateful for the man who taught us the Bible. The greatest gift we could ever receive. We love you Carey and Kitty and the entire norman family. We pray for you. Carey...happy trails to you Until we meet again!~ The Burketts

Our loss is so great with the passing of our precious friend. We love Carey so much and he has been such a precious support to us through the years in so many ways. Our hearts and prayers go out in love to Kitty, his dear girls, and his whole family. Also to Dean and Sheila and Christine who were so close to Carey, his family and to his service at West View. Mike was honored to be able to give Carey his first “ride along” with the Sheriffs Department and he and Carey so enjoyed any chance they could relate to each other over their mutual love of golf. I have been privileged to know Carey from his teens. He and his ministry was loved and supported and respected also by my parents, Bill & Marj Warrick. Carey’s love for his Lord has been consistent and he has rewards we can’t even imagine …creating the crown he will so joyously cast at his Savior’a feet. Praising God for Carey’s undying love for the Lord and that we were blest to have been able to be a part of the life of this wonderful Pastor and friend.

I was privileged to know Carey for 30 years. He was instrumental in helping me grow in faith. He also was so brave when he taught me how to drive a stick shift. My heart has been so heavy from his passing but i have been focusing on Gods promises and the impact Catey has had on so many lives especially mine.

Debbie Kackson on September 06, 2018

Carey was such a wonderful and kind hearted person. I have so many wonderful memories of my uncle. Like when he potted a palm tree and decorated it to look like the beach complete with a Barbie in a lounge chair just so I could take that back home to Nebraska. Or when he gave me my very first bible at Farrell's Ice Cream parlor in Chula Vista. When my grandparents died, Carey would send me texts of love and encouragement and sometimes photos of himself that meant more to me than he will ever know. My most treasured memory is all of our family in my grandparents basement all laughing while we each took turns with the hula hoop remembering what a character he was, and how happy we all were together. I love you Uncle Carey.

I don’t know how to process this loss of Carey Norman. I have so many fond memories of having Carey ride along with me on patrol down in Imperial Beach when I was assigned to that wacky Station in the 90’s - with the Sheriff’s Department of course. Much laughter. Many a delicious late night burrito. Many classic episodes of crushing crime with Carey lending moral and spiritual support. I was so honored that he came to my retirement party just a few months ago, and spoke about our adventures. Much Aloha to the family.

Matt McClendon on September 05, 2018

My prayers for Carey’s family & church family. He was a generous & kind spirit. I loved his sense of humor & joy in singing worship to our Lord. I remember how his voice cracked reading my eulogy for my dad, where I spoke about Dad being my first dance partner, when I stood on his feet. Sweet soul. I was blessed to have known him.

Pastor Carey was used by God to confirm my calling as a missionary. He helped lay the foundation for my biblical bearings which take my through the tough times in the mission field. We will miss him terribly but his legacy in our lives continue on.

Cecil Amog on September 02, 2018

Carey was one of the first pastors I became acquainted with when I entered the ministry 28 years ago. I know that I will see him again in the presence of the Savior he loved and served. My heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to his family and the Westview Bible Church family. God is not unjust to forget his work and labor of love (Hebrews 6:10).

Pastor Tom Chesko on September 02, 2018

My oh my. I am in Thailand and just received this sad news via an email from my daughter. I'll be back in San Diego on the 13th, so will be sure to make it to Brother Carey's Celebration of Life, jet lag not withstanding. Carey, Kitty, and their girls were our next-door neighbors for a few years in the 1980s before our return to the field. "We sorrow for a season, but not as others who have no hope." 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Ron Myers, Missionary on September 01, 2018

We both loved him! Kind and gentle pastor who blessed us with preaching of the Word of God. He is missed greatly.

Fred and Kitty Daugherty on September 01, 2018

Pastor Carey was a young pastor in his mid-20’s at Westview when I was a teenager in the youth group. He and his wife Kitty gave me rides to and from prayer meetings and youth group events before I could drive myself. I have memories of him playing his guitar as he led our youth group or the entire congregation in worship music, taking us on youth group trips, and much more. Pastor Carey had a quick wit and sense of humor. He held strong opinions but his love for God, his family, flock, friends, and others in the community was even stronger. He taught me and many others a love for scripture and the comfort and guidance it brings in times of need. He often taught us scripture set to a guitar tune. One such song has been playing in my head since I heard of his passing. “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life . . . shall be able to separate us from the Love of God.” Romans 8: 38-39. I know Pastor Carey is embraced in the Everlasting Arms. Holding onto this promise and sending my love and prayers to Kitty, their daughters and extended family during this time.

Doug Mahoney on September 01, 2018

Words are inadequate to describe the loss of Pastor Carey. Never could we repay all of the goodness he instilled in so many, me included. Always the voice of reason, calm, and reassuring. Quick with a smile and words of comfort without judgement. His sense of humor...he fit right in with us. He was without a doubt a blessing to so many of us while he volunteered at the Imperial Beach Station. He rode with us deputies in our patrol cars as we responded to radio calls and he saw and learned right along with us about all of life's ups and downs. He always gave us sound words of advice, blessed marriages of deputies, attended the sick and dying, all the while providing such comfort and reassurance with his presence to the rest of us and our families. I can not describe all he has given with these few words. An awesome man. He will live forever in my heart...
