Bertha Marcello was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on March 27, 1927 and passed away peacefully on February 18, 2018 in La Mesa, CA. While Bertha made her home in San Diego for the past 89 years, her heritage originated in Portugal. Her father, Jose De Oliveira, from Lisbon, Portugal married Maria Gloria Gracsa Terceira, from the Azores, after migrating to Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1922. Bertha was the youngest of three daughters and is preceded in death by her parents and two older sisters, Mary Carmina Oliveira – Harris and Dorothy Oliveira – Currier.
Bertha married Raymond John Marcello on April 30, 1949. Together they raised four daughters, Nancy M. Davis, Susan F. Corrao, Charlotte A. Marcello of San Diego and Judy L. Flory from Beaumont, CA. Bertha is remembered by her daughters as being an incredible mother and is cherished by her Nieces and Nephews, as a “favored Aunt”. She was an excellent seamstress, designed and sewed various clothing for her daughters including, Communion and Portuguese Fiesta dresses, Halloween costumes, wedding dresses, school clothes, etc.
Bertha is famous for her attractive singing in harmony ability, cooking, stylish dress and her artistic talent in designing ceramic pieces, posters and paintings. After 20 years, Bertha returned to work outside the home and became employed in Civil Service at North Island and was soon promoted to Production Controller. Upon retirement, to Bertha’s delight, she was able to spend more time with her grandchildren, Scott and Jeremy Davis; Kristen and John Corrao, all of San Diego.
Bertha will be sorely missed. She had a beautiful smile and warmed the hearts of all who loved her. She gave her very best in life and was ready to go home with her Lord and Savior.
Graveside Services will be held on Friday, February 23, at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, San Diego, CA
